TRT roundtable, Translators Reflect on Translation — Subtitling and Inclusive Language: Challenges in Portuguese
18 June 2024 | 5:00-6:30 | FLUL Room C128

An informal roundtable discussion on some of the challenges of subtitling, namely gender neutrality, translation strategies, non-binary language and the possible use of the pronoun “elu” instead of “ele”/”ela” in Portuguese subtitles. This discussion will be conducted mainly in Portuguese.
Some of the topics up for discussion:
- Gender neutrality in Portuguese subtitling - examples and practical translation strategies
- How to subtitle when the gender is not defined or the character is non-binary?
- How can we avoid introducing gender stereotypes such as “o médico” (male doctor) or “a enfermeira” (female nurse) in our translation?
- How can we be faithful to scripts of films and series that are intentionally gender-neutral?
Together, we will look for ways to resolve some of these difficulties. The audience is encouraged to participate.
