Presentation

Established in 1998, the Centre for Comparative Studies (CEComp) is located at the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon. Its scientific identity is grounded in the practice of comparative methods within the Humanities, promoting an ongoing dialogue between various fields of knowledge. Recognised as a rapidly expanding community with a rigorous, diversified, and inclusive research, CEComp brings together researchers from diverse academic backgrounds and nationalities. It has also cultivated a significant international presence through partnerships with research projects and initiatives, as well as international PhD programmes. CEComp received a rating of “Very Good” in the most recent (2020) evaluation by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Research & Strategy

The Centre’s research involves a critical examination of the epistemological challenges presented by Comparatism, positioning itself at the frontier of various disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and thus contributing to the emergence of new interdisciplinary fields. The structural layout of CEComp is designed to embody its comparative and interdisciplinary approach, with its members organized into four research groups:

CITCOM - Citizenship, Culture, and Memory
LOCUS - Spaces, Places, and Landscapes
MORPHE - Text and Memory
THELEME - Interarts and Intermedia Studies

These groups are composed of clusters that perform their work across different branches of an overarching foundation that binds them. The objective of such a configuration is to guide the critical and epistemological intersections fostered by the Centre, and to address the intricacies inherent in the interplay between art, culture, society, and history – that is, between the textual and the contextual which is the driving force behind CEComp’s research.

CEComp also features three distinctive initiatives: Periodicals, Community, and Digital Humanities. These initiatives crisscross all research groups and aim to promote the coordination between CEComp’s activities and their dissemination, promotion, and development both within and beyond the academic community.
