Postcolonial People: Historicizing the retornados
24 Janeiro 2023 | 16:30—18:00 | Sala B112.B (Biblioteca da FLUL)
After a successful start, the interactive seminar cycle ‘Memory, Culture and Citizenship in Post-Colonial Nations’ is pleased to invite you to its second edition. This time, the organisers from CITCOM’s sub-group Legacies of Empires welcome Christoph Kalter, Professor of History at the University of Agder in Norway, who specialises in the modern history of Western Europe in its global contexts. At FLUL, Prof. Kalter will present his book Postcolonial People: The Return from Africa and the Remaking of Portugal, which was published by Cambridge University Press this year, and which looks at how, following the 1974 Carnation Revolution, over half a million Portuguese settlers 'returned' from Angola, Mozambique and other parts of Portugal's crumbling empire to their country of origin and citizenship. Portuguese decolonisation and the return migrations it triggered will be explored as a global, transcultural history of the twentieth century.
Moderated by historian Dr. Morgane Delaunay (CEComp, FLUL), the seminar will discuss the returnees’ history, memory and integration, and contribute to current debates about colonial racism and its afterlives in a climate of rising nationalist populism. The seminar will be held in English.
