Inaugurating the 6th edition of THELEME-Interartes & Intermedia Seminars (2023-2024), Guillermo Laín Corona (UNED) will offer a presentation on “Project PoeMAS: new ways to study poetry and music in Spanish”.

Abstract:
Project PoeMAS: new ways to study poetry and music in Spanish

PoeMAS, "PoeMAS, “POEsía para MÁS gente. La poesía en la música popular contemporánea”, is a research project funded by the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation, to study the links between poetry and contemporary popular music. With over 30 researchers from Spain and other countries in Europe, Latin America and the USA, our research has been disseminated in an annual seminar since 2019, the last one having been hold at University of Seville in October 2023. Also, we have published a number of articles and special issues in scientific journals, such as Pasavento. Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, Bulletin of Contemporary Hispanic Studies, Cauce. Revista de Filología, Comunicación y sus Didácticas and Ínsula. Revista de Letras y Ciencias Humanas. The main result of the project is a database designed with the best practices of Digital Humanities that includes songs based on poems. Although PoeMAS mainly studies Spanish poetry and music, we are happy to open our scope to other languages. In this presentation, I will show how the database works, and how it can be used to carry out different analysis.


Guillermo Laín Corona has a BA in Hispanic Philology (2004) and a PhD in Spanish Literature (2009) from University of Malaga. He also has an MA (2007) and a PhD (2011) in Hispanic Studies from University College London. Before joining Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in 2016, he taught Spanish Language and Literature at University College London, Royal Holloway University of London, University of Malaga, University of Seville, and Universidad Europea de Madrid. His main research field is Contemporary Spanish Literature, having published a number of articles in scientific journals, such as Boletín de la Real Academia Española or Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, and several books, the last one being a collective monograph on the Spanish singer Joaquín Sabina o fusilar al rey de los poetas (2018). In 2024, a new collective book will be released, titled Joaquín Sabina: ocho versos tristes para una canción. Since 2019, he is one of the two Principal Investigators (together with Clara I. Martínez Cantón) of PoeMAS, a research project studying the links between poetry and contemporary popular music, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. Between 2019 and 2023, he was Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs and Digitalization at the Faculty of Philology (UNED).
