Jaune Horizon. Photography Documentary Initiative
25-28 October 2023 | 14:30-18:30 | Galeria Imago Lisboa, FLUL (Room B112.C)

Jaune Horizon. Photography Documentary Initiative. Including the screening and debate of Philippe Bazin's film and the masterclass "Field Philosophy and Critical Documentary Photography: Politics of Representation", with Christiane Vollaire and Philippe Bazin.
As part of the 5th edition of the Imago Lisboa - Photo Festival, dedicated to the theme Rethinking Identity, in partnership with the Centre for Comparative Studies (CEComp) and the Programme in Communication and Culture of the School of Arts and Humanities at the Universidade de Lisboa (as part of the activities to commemorate the Programme’s 20th anniversary), two initiatives will be held to address the theme from the point of view of documentary photographic and videographic practices and their relationship with field philosophy. More than ever, the role of photography and its dissemination on social networks in the construction and deconstruction of identities is crucial these days. And the documentary field has played a key role in the critical exercise of the formulation of identities and their multiple derivations, within the scope of the practices of the politics of representation. Identity is now a more complex concept, and its political nature has been the subject of an ever-growing artistic reflection.
The first initiative, to be held on October 25 at Galeria Imago Lisboa (Vale de Santo António Street, no. 50 C), starting at 6 pm, consists of a screening of the film Jaune Horizon (2019), by French photographer Philippe Bazin, responsible for a critical documentary work of great social and political involvement, in various crisis scenarios, over the last few decades. The film is based on 724 photographs that Phillipe Bazin took during the Second Assembly of the Yellow Vests/Gilets Jaunes (ADA) movement in Saint-Nazaire, between April 5 and 7, 2019. The screening will be accompanied by a debate with philosopher Christiane Vollaire, author of the concept of field philosophy (Pour une philosophie de terrain, 2017). Christiane Vollaire's work complements this critical visual approach with a new philosophical approach to reality. Her praxis is that of listening and giving back the word to people who live, share experiences, and organize themselves to face situations of political hardship.
The second initiative, to be held on October 26 at the School of Arts and Humanities of the Universidade de Lisboa (in room B112.C, next to the Library), from 3.45 pm to 7 pm, consists of a masterclass entitled "Field Philosophy and critical documentary photography: politics of representation", to be held by Philippe Bazin and Christiane Vollaire on the last decades of their work in complex social and political situations, allowing for an interdisciplinary approach between critical documentary photography and the notion of field philosophy. The event is free to attend and does not require registration. It is aimed at the academic and artistic community.
