Abstract:
“From one bastard to another”: new mythic genealogies and altered family relationships in the anime Blood of Zeus
In this session, the concept of “bastard son” in different types of families that are represented in the television anime Blood of Zeus (Netflix) will be examined, based on some ideas of Peter Sloterdijk’s theory of culture. The use of audiovisual resources derived from intermediality will be highlighted to show how they collaborate in the structure and aesthetics of the show to produce meaning, especially in the case of some “bastardy” myths which are re-elaborated. The intertextual relationships with some works of classical Greek literature are going to be reviewed to point out their affiliation (tradition) and to highlight the changes that are significant today (innovation). The mythical hybridization that represents the inclusion of Christian “demons” in relation to bastardy will be analyzed and finally an interpretation on the possible genealogical implications of the anime will be offered.
