16 October 2025 | FLUL and Biblioteca Nacional

The Programme in Communication and Culture of the School of Arts and Humanities of the Universidade de Lisboa, CEComp – Centre for Comparative Studies at the Universidade de Lisboa and the Library of the School of Arts and Humanities of the Universidade de Lisboa will host the Symposium ‘Typographic History and Culture: Contemporary Issues’, which will be attended by Gerry Leonidas, Professor at the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (United Kingdom). This initiative, comprising a workshop, a seminar and a conference, will be held jointly with CHAM – Centre for Humanities at the New University of Lisbon, with the National Library of Portugal as a partner institution.

The symposium proposes a reflection on typography, its history and the role it plays in the circulation of knowledge, from a critical and sociocultural perspective.

The programme includes the workshop ‘Typographic Education: Culture and Practice’, to be held at FLUL (room B112.E), near the Library of the School of Arts and Humanities of the Universidade de Lisboa, as part of the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of its new building. This workshop is open to all interested parties, with particular relevance for researchers, teachers and students in the fields of history and sociology of culture, press, typography, cultural studies, design, book and publishing studies, textual criticism, literary studies, documentation and information sciences, as well as other areas of the humanities and social sciences. Primary and secondary school teachers, as well as postgraduate students, are also welcome.

Participation is free of charge, subject to registration here, and is limited to 15 places.

On 17 October, the Research Group Seminar ‘Information, Reading and Forms of Writing’ (from CHAM) and Professor Gerry Leonidas’ lecture entitled ‘Typography as an Emerging Global Discipline’ will also take place at the National Library of Portugal, both events being free to attend.
