Free Course: Women in Portuguese Cinema

In January and February 2026, the course “Women in Portuguese Cinema” will take place under the scientific coordination of Mariana Liz. Other lecturers in the course include Manuela Penafria, Paulo Cunha, Ana Cristina Pereira e Hilary Owen.
“Women in Portuguese Cinema” aims to provide education and/or cinema professionals with the necessary tools for teaching and discussing Portuguese films from a gender perspective. It focuses on six themes that provide an understanding of the history of women's presence in Portuguese cinema, from directing and writing to the idea of stardom, from issues of representation to quantitative data on women’s participation in the sector.
The course will be developed using a theoretical-practical methodology over six weeks, totalling 35 hours of work (15 contact hours and 20 hours of asynchronous work), with all sessions taking place online.
