Abstract:
Translating Into Three Dimensions

The lecture focuses on discussing the system employed in my artistic practice. I am researching ways to ‘translate’ literary works into sculptural objects, and have developed a system combining scouring literary data, mathematical data and artistic expression to convey the meaning and content of the text into its sculptural, artistic form, making it more accessible, as ‘the language of art’ may be understood with no prior knowledge of its literary predecessor. The study showcases one piece of text – a theatre play ‘Thermidor’ by Stanisława Przybyszewska – as well as the type of information that can be extricated from it, the way it was extricated from it, and the finished sculptures that were cerated as the result of the analytical process. The method presented is a basis for my subsequent artstic practice and the PhD project I am developing.

Antonina Lorek holds MA in Sculpture (2022) from Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts, where she is currently a PhD candidate as a scholarship student. Her research is focused on developing a universally understood ‘language of art’, and is a case study of Stanisława Przybyszewska’s – Polish playwright and painter – creative works. Her supervisors are Piotr Twardowski, PhD – a renowned sculptor – and Katarzyna Trzeciak, PhD – comparative literature lecturer.
