Textualities

Coord: Rita Patrício

Textualities and all its subprojects deal with Portuguese literature, having purposes such as: the study of literary forms of autobiographical literature; the study of Portuguese literary magazines; critical edition of modern texts.

  • AUTOBIO – Literatura Autobiográfica: Questões teóricas e corpora

This project is developed through case studies and other activities of individual researchers, such as the publication of essays and the participation in national and international academic events of this field of studies. One of the most important output sof this project was the editions of  A Visagem do cronista. Antologia de crónica autobiográfica portuguesa. Séculos XIX-XXI, selection and introduction by Carina Infante do Carmo. Several Phd and MA thesis are in progress.

  • POLYGON

The project has as its corpus a set of Portuguese literary magazines which, from the beginning of the 20th century until today, despite having always been considered pivotal moments in the constitution of a specific national literary system, have proposed as their most decisive feature the delineation of divergent and very particular international and interartistic scenarios. The reconstitution and problematization of these relations and these dialogic movements is thus a fundamental critical act to assess in all its width the consistency and structural universality of the gestures of many Portuguese authors and artists of the last century, as well as the value of their cultural performance.

  • Literary estate of writer Fernanda Botelho, 1926-2007

This project (supported by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian – Recuperação, tratamento e organização de acervos documentais 2015) is now in the last phase of inventory, catalogue and technical tasks in the Estate Fernanda Botelho. The work in progress addresses correspondence, photographs and other documents. The republishing of the works by the novelist Fernanda Botelho, with critical prefaces, started in 2017, with the publication of Esta noite sonhei com Brueghel (preface by Paula Morão, Abysmo Editions). Since then, four other volumes have been published (Lourenço é nome de jogral, Gritos da minha dança, A fábula e a gata, O ângulo raso).

The project is also working with non academic institutions such as Public Libraries, Schools and other entities.

Objectives

The chief goals of AUTOBIO are:

  • to explore new theoretical approaches to autobiographic literature and to self-representation, specially discussing topics such as subjectivity and representation;
  • to critically examine through case-studies the way in which the study of autobiography is a productive field to think about modern and contemporary Portuguese literature;
  • to produce diferent types of scientific outputs (articles in specialist journals, academic theses), that will contribute to the study of literary autobiography in modern and contemporary Portuguese literature.

The chief goals of POLYGON are:

  • to map the presence of non-Portuguese authors and texts in Portuguese literary magazines of the 20th-21st centuries;
  • to map the presence – either material or by reference - of non-verbal arts in these same periodicals;
  • considering the data collected, to develop theoretical-critical reflections in order to reread and reassess the importance of the publications and their protagonists on a supra-national level, rescuing them from a narrow historical-literary perspective that has been too dependent on the landmarks of the constitution of modern and contemporary Portuguese literature.

The chief goals of FERNANDA BOTELHO are:

  • to complete the inventory and the catalogue of the estate of Fernanda Botelho;
  • to republish the works by the novelist Fernanda Botelho;
  • to develop different activities based on the work of Fernanda Botelho, mainly in public schools and libraries (CeComp Community).
